View Full Version : Don't you think there should be Google Torrent Search?

With bittorrent being the best way to transfer files and torrents being hard to find at times and full of copyrighted stuff, don't you think there should be a Google Torrent Search? It could exclude all copyrighted torrents. www.legaltorrents.com is trying to do this, but it's still in beta and doesn't have that much content. Google pwns at search. They could team up with (or just buy!) legaltorrents and create the best legal torrent search ever!

I think it would be great!

Try adding "filetype:torrent" to your search.

Tada!

"name + torrent" in google should give you links to whatever you want.

Why bother when there's isohunt?

I think it might be too much of a legal headache for Google for it to be worth it. It would be nice to have, of course, but there are many, many other ways to track down torrents.

and full of copyrighted stuff

Just about every download through a torrent is copyrighted... actually I can't think of anything that is not...

Amateur porn? I just post it as an example, I have never downloaded or seen any actual porn in my life. Porn is bad. Yeah, yeah, bad.

The site meetthegimp.org uploades all there (free and legal) videos to The Pirate Bay, same for "legal torrents", and all linux distros like Ubuntu, SuSE and so on. And the free and legal music from Jamendo is also uploaded.

But sure, most stuff is not legal in most places.

I use Google from time to time to find torrents.

well considering this is a linux forum that comes to mind as a legal uncopyrighted torrent, jamendo now has torrents of the music on its site, theres tons of free legal stuff, hell theres copyrighted stuff thats legal to share, thats how WOW sends out their patches

there is no uncopyrighted stuff except for stuff in the public domain...

what about www.legaltorrents.com? They're building an entire website of that!

My favourite torrent search site is Torrentz (www.torrentz.com). It's really useful, because identical torrents duplicated across sites are all merged under one entry. For example, if I search for Ubuntu 8.04 there are several torrents listed, the entries for which lead me on to all of their respective pages on the actual hosts.

It keeps stuff really tidy, has a library the size of all those torrent sites combined (but still sorted in an orderly way), and has some nice features so I can really quickly find if something is worth my while.

even that is probably a stolen tape, or some video put on the internet without the consent of the participants/actors.

Well... google doesn't directly put torrents in directories for easy browsing, but search for any file and you are likely to find it in google. if you can't find it, it means you aren't looking hard enough.

Besides, google is in a bit of a dilemma, they are supposed to be the "do no evil" empire that doesn't want to get on the way of others. But with the countless products they are releasing they are bound to push a few people out of business. If they get into the torrents, then they will force a few torrent sites out of business as well. That won't be ethical, because there are already lots of established sites, and google using its power to move into the field would be plain evil.

"The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few or one"... if you view it that way, Google is doing no evil, but if you start thinking negatively, im sure you could come up with countless examples of bad things google has done. it's all relative...

There are plenty of Linux distros that have a torrent.

The search would have a bad impact on Google's public appeal, since the ambiguity of the legal issues will be constantly reviewed.
