The screen comes up with lines shifting diagonally it seems to be driver related i beleive. When you are at the ubuntu main menu instead of choosing the first option (start or install ubuntu) choose the 2nd one "Start ubuntu in safe graphics mode" If this makes no difference then maybe try using the alternate cd (http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/)which is a text base installer.
