Help me write about women in open source

Hi all

I'm writing an article about women in open source for Linux Format magazine (www.linuxformat.co.uk). It's very rare for a woman to appear in the magazine's pages at all, so we thought we should address that and ask where are the women in the community and what can we do to encourage more women to take part.

I would love to speak to you about the subject: either about why you think forums and mailing lists like this are a good idea, or more personally on your own experiences and advice for, say, female computer science students or women who'd like to start contributing to projects.

By the way, I think it's great Ubuntu has done this. It's one of the most popular distros in the magazine, and it taking a strong stand on the apparent absence of women from open source is wonderful. :)

Not exactly the strictest definition of open source, you cannot forget Jeri Ellsworth. She's smart, cute as a button, and a self educated geek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeri_Ellsworth). She is a self taught engineer who designed a handheld C64 emulator and a full-on "c64 on steroids" that employs commodity parts like PCI cards and the ATX form factor. I don't believe her designs are GPL but they are open and (thanks to QVC driven high volume marketing) affordable.

As you look at the stuff on her website keep in mind: she has designed hardware video acceleration technology and she has a proven talent for reverse engineering and creating mass marketable designs. Seriously... Shuttleworth needs to court her to put those talents to work creating a linux friendly motherboard chipset. She's "a cute little redhead," but she has my utmost respect as an engineer.
