Ubuntu 7.04 Install Not Setting Up Dual Boot to XP?

I had two copies of Windows XP running dual boot.
I installed Ubuntu 7.04 over 1st version of XP
(e.g. in dos world c: drive)
Installed Ubuntu several times and Windows XP never shows up in boot list?
I can see the XP files in Ubuntu using Desktop File Browser.
How can I make Ubuntu boot XP at startup from the list?

Before installing Ubuntu I was using Partition Magic's BootMagic to dual boot two versions of WinXP.
Installed Ubuntu again, still no boot option for Windows XP -

Is /dev/sda5 your Windows partition? Usually, Windows needs to be on a primary partition. However, grub can boot Windows on a logical partition, but you have to meet certain conditions. See this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766403&highlight=logical+partition+Windows&page=2). First, you need to set the boot flag on the /dev/sda5 with a partition editor, like Gparted (Gnome Partition Editor). Then, you need to add the chainloading instructions to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file, but leave out the usual makeactive statement. Add these statements after the ### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST separator:

root (hd0,4)
savedefault
chainloader +1Then reboot, and try the new menu item.

GPARTED and Grub Boot Manager changes were done but have not allowed XP to boot, but the thread you provided gave me a temporary solution.
I can boot XP using "fix NTLDR" by diskette selection number 3 -

Based on this information, any suggested corrections?

I can only guess that the root statement might be wrong. Try the argument (hd0,5).
