Did you do an update on Gutsy before you tried the upgrade to Hardy? And, what is the exact error message you get when you try the Partial Upgrade?

DSTEW: That's the mistake I made.

I was using Feisty. My update manager was regularly giving me patches but never gave me the upgrade option (either upgrade to Gutsy or to Hardy). I've read great things about Hardy, so I burned ISO CDs of both upgrades (from 7.04 to 7.10, and from 7.10 to 8.04).

But I accidentally put the Hardy CD in first. The system whirred a bit and said it couldn't do the upgrade, so I immediately removed it -- and then restarted my system and put in the Gutsy CD.

And ever since then: Partial Upgrade. When I click OK, it eventually prompts me for the Hardy CD -- and the whole thing fails. The update manager now shows 462 updates, none of which it can implement.

Is there a way to "clear out" the update manager and start from scratch?

I know it was a pretty stupid mistake, but it was an honest one.

Do you have an internet connection?

Do you have an internet connection?

Yes, I do. My Ubuntu software never had trouble using it, and the update manager function worked very well -- except that it never gave me the UPGRADE option from either 7.04 to 7.10, or to 8.04.

What I'm wondering at this point is ... Is there a way that I can just "reset" the update manager so that it stops thinking that I want to go straight from 7.04 to 8.04, and then let me do the upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 (and then eventually 7.10 to 8.04)? ...

Or should I just backup any important data and do a clean install to 8.04?

Thanks.

We can try some commands on the command line. I assume you are currently running Fiesty, correct? On the command line (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) enter
sudo apt-get checkPost the response.

OK. Yes, I am using Feisty.

Here are the results that I get:

sudo apt-get check

That's all. Make sense to you?

(Thanks again.)

DSTEW: See my reply above. Thanks.

Yes, that is good. It means the apt-get system is generally intact. Now, on the command line do:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgradeNote, this is not an attempt at a distribution upgrade, these commands only update your current system. Any error messages with these commands?

OK. I did both commands, and below are the results.

Need to get 0B/174MB of archives.
After unpacking 12.3MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

AND THEN I typed the "y" and got this:

Media change: please insert the disc labeled
'Ubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Release i386 (20080422.2)'
in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter

NOTE that it asked for the Hardy, not the Gutsy.

AND THEN ... the CD whirred and whirred for about six minutes and, then, this appeared in the terminal box:

Package configuration

┌───────────────────────────┤ Configuring libc6 ├───────────────────────────┐
│ │
│ Running services and programs that are using NSS need to be restarted, │
│ otherwise they might not be able to do lookup or authentication any │
│ more. The installation process is able to restart some services (such as │
│ ssh or telnetd), but other programs cannot be restarted automatically. │
│ One such program that needs manual stopping and restart after the glibc │

│ stopped before the upgrade: gdm │
│ │
│ If you want to interrupt the upgrade now and continue later, please │
│ answer No to the question below. │
│ │
│ <Ok>

So then I hit enter and in a little box labeled "Configuring libc6," was asked: "Do you want to upgrade glibc now? Yes/No"[/COLOR]

And ... a long process started ... the terminal session for which I have attached in a txt file called "fultona_terminal."

Then I restarted the system and ... it gave me a black screen saying that it was stopping or terminating all services and that it "will now restart." It didn't restart for 10 minutes, so I forced a shutdown and repowered and the same kernel (16?) started, I got the same logon sequence as before, the same desktop, the same BUT no more wireless.

Gosh, if I've messed something up, would it be easier just to do a fresh install?

As always, THANKS!

Wow. You are traveling in territory unfamiliar to me. If it goes bad, you might reboot in Recovery Mode, then try again. That is because Recovery Mode does not start gdm or xdm, so the process may not get blocked.

I'll let you know how this little adventure winds up.

I think I'm just going to do a fresh install. I've already backed up all of my important data.

Thanks!!!

Fresh install completed. Very smooth so far. Even wireless worked immediately.

Thanks for your help so I could try the "upgrade" approach, but I just got in too deep. THANKS.

kmount, that error occurs if Synaptic is open and you try to use the command line apt-get. Both processes use the same resources, so when one is active, it "locks" the resources to prevent other processes from accessing it. You just need to be sure only one process is going at any time.

I am not running Synaptic, infact when I try to open synaptic I get the message: Unable to get exclusive lock
I need to know how to stop any process that may be running in the background

To look at your processes, use the command Top. You can kill a process using System --> Administration --> System Monitor, processes tab. If you know the application name, you can use the killall command. For example, if firefox was frozen, you could get a terminal with ctrl-atl-F1 and enter
sudo killall firefoxThat kills firefox and all the processes it may have spawned.
