Looking to buy myself a Ethernet Hard Drive to set up via LAN. As usual every drive I look at is saying Vista approved - but what about Linux.

Looking for about 250-500Gb - anyone with any experiences to share. What to /not to buy. Will I have to leave it formated NTFS/FAT?

Would be nice to hear what you guys have done.

Cheers

most of them probably run on linux y'know, so most will work in linux. some dont though so i guess you best check. if it shares with samba then it should work, and if it also offers NFS then thats a plus, since that is the linux filesharing system.

i was gonna get a NAS a while ago but didnt due to being too poor. i was gonna get this one here (http://www.raidsonic.de/en/pages/products/product_news.php?pTID=5052&p2ID=5018&p3ID=5093&p4ID=4837&p5ID=5122&p6ID=4901&p7ID=4972)

it has a bittorrent client, UPnP client and can share either with samba or NFS. its about £100 and obviously you'd need to buy hard drives to put in it. i was gonna format it as ext3. i dunno if its overkill for what you want. i was mostly just getting it for the bittorrent client to save electricity

I am not going to saying for certain that you will be able to go out and buy a network and it will work, but from experience, I have not yet found a PCI card that does work out the box on Linux. The worst problem I have had is Linux not automatically loading the drivers when putting a second card in an existing setup.

You might look at the Linksys Network Storage Link. Has 2x usb ports + ethernet port to connect to your existing network. I have 2 usb2 hdds connected to mine and it works perfectly with linux.

Thanks, looks really good. Haven't got any external hard drive yet. If I already had a USB drive, this would have been a great solution. Thanks.

Lovely piece of equipment but slightly out of my price range. I will have to work half a year for that. Thanks though

The NSLU2 is more affordable and works with USB hard or flash drives: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/65399
