Hi, Need help on this one big time:

Have a nvidia gforce8 series card.

Have installed the latest version 8.04 and have major issues with Graphics.

The installer has no graphics, just comes to a terminal and stops.

When we went from 7.10 we did an update. Not a complete install.

I am wondering, should I have done a complete install or not?

I'm not much on computers, so I'm silly enough to ask this:

Should I completely remove all programs/downloads and start over as if it were a new computer? Or should just updating be best?

It appears also that the auto config or whatever it is gets in the way of modifying anything. Is there any way around that?

We also have trouble with the screen resolution, it goes to 640x480.

Also the trading platform I use operates on firefox with Java. The java in the latest upgrade is too high for their system. Is there any way to downgrade the java in the 8.04 release?

That's a lot of questions. I am very newbie to this, but would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks

Hello cb25,
I have found that a full clean install is the way to go and will probably sort out your other problems on the way.
good luck with it,it is quite simple to do.

Thanks for that Wombil.

We have done a full re-install. May have ironed out a few bugs.

Still have major trouble with the driver for nvidia.

Comes up in 640x screen. And we can't get 3d and compiz etc because of this.

As noted before we have the gforce 8 series card.

If you or anyone out there have suggestions how to get this card to detect properly would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Back again. This is so far a disaster. We have done complete install. We have tried Mint 4 and Mint 5 which are supposed to be more hardware friendly. All have failed.

WE NEED SOME MAJOR HELP ON THIS ONE!!!

Below is our current xorg.conf file that gives us a full 1680x1050 resolution.

If we use the nvidia driver in any way it defaults back to 640x480 resolution.

We need compiz and 3D acceleration, and of course this does not work with the code below. So, in short we either have 3D and compiz with the right screen resolution OR we have the right screen resolution and NO 3D!!!

We have tried heaps of suggested links etc etc, but no joy.

So if anyone can take a look at this and help us it would be appreciated heaps.

Thanks.

Have you tried doing your Ubuntu installation with the ALTERNATE CD ?

Have you tried installing your graphics with ENVY ?

Which video card do you have?

I have a very basic knowledge of ubuntu but a good background in computers and in my opinion 8.04 is not ready yet for any 8000 and 9000 series video cards from nvidia. I looked everywhere on this site and have found nothing but trouble for those with these cards including myself. 8.04 will not even let you use a higher video setting like 7.10. The terrible 640x480 is the only one you can use in 8.04. I went back to 7.10 and will stay there till ubuntu is fixed to run those video cards and gives us more video options. I have found that the Linux wizzards have figured some sort of fix concerning 8.04 and 8800 series cards but even they have off and on issues. Just my opinon.

I suppose as a last resort you could try downloading the driver from nvidia.com and attempt a manual install, its what i did right up to gutsy, because none of the scripts worked.

its not that hard, so I'd give it a try if i were you..

couple of things to watch out for, you need compilers and header files lying around, so check out this link first

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=57368

make sure you change the name of the driver to be the latest you downloaded, from nvidia.com

good luck

Hi Sef and Others,

Thanks for replying. We have a geforce 8500 gt video card.

By the replies so far that is in the range which are causing all the trouble.

I will probably have to go back to a previous version of ubuntu until those bugs are sorted!

Cheers n Thanx
