Are you trying to do more set of updates at a time or are you installing something at the same time as updating?

This error occurs when you're trying to use more than one package manager at the same time. These include: apt-get, aptitude, adept, update-manager, add/remove (whatever the binary is named), synaptic, etc.

So, if you get this error, close any other package managers you're running, and if you're not running any, try waiting a bit, update-manager may be doing its thing on boot, and if you wait for it to finish, you'll be fine.

Also, don't use the root user. Use sudo instead.
