Can't read what i type in on the login screen

i just installed ubuntu 8.04 on my compture but it won't work. After chossing to boot it up, it takes me to the login screen. There i can type in my username but i can't read it. Its just really small and i don't even know if it is actully english. Even if i just type in my username and password and it acts likes its loging on but then, it just takes me back to the orginal login screen. What can i do?

ps. i can really the "options" tab but i can't read anything in that tab
