Alright, it's old news. But I never knew how sick Microsoft Bob was.

Oh sure, fancy is popular. But fancy usually pinches and well, heck, it just isn’t comfortable.

That’s why there’s Bob. Bob makes your computer as comfortable as an old shoe.

Fancy, schmancy. It’s feeling comfortable with your computer that really matters. That’s why there’s Bob™. With Bob, you can customize your computer so it works the way you like to work.

Bob features the newest thing in software: a social interface. Which is a fancy way of saying “a really nice program that’ll make your computer comfortable and friendly to you.”

Bob will help you balance your checkbook, write letters, exchange electronic mail, keep a calendar, record addresses, play GeoSafari and access Windows®-based programs. And do it all comfortably.

Bob has personal guides – animated on-screen characters – that lead you every step of the way. In fact, Bob is so easy to use, it doesn’t even come with a manual. All you need is an 8-megabyte computer.

To meet Bob for yourself, stop by a local software retailer and ask for Bob. Sure, Bob’s not fancy, but isn’t comfortable really where it’s at?

Bob™
Have a nice computer!

Microsoft® where do you want to go today?™

I'm not usually big on Microsoft-bashing, but did this disturb anyone else?

I have heard about that. It was MS's attempt to make computers dumbed down. It didn't work. It just made people mad. It went through the same prompts everytime you did an action (picture: a wizard for everything) and was childishly designed.

Did you ever see the file browser that was all 3d matrix like some lawnmower man crap?
where you went into a 3d world and floated through your file system. I can't remember the name of it, but it was pretty wild

Do you mean the one they used in Jurassic Park? ("Hey, this is UNIX - I know this!"). That one was FSN, and used to be made by SGI. The File System Visualiser (http://fsv.sourceforge.net/) is based on it.

no you can get it on c-net for ms it's like the file system in that movie the 'Lawn Mower Man' It feels like a fps video game. It warns you when you start the program
"This is not a game this is your file system and you can bork your box up real nice if your not careful"

That is cool :-)

For those interested, make sure you have:

sudo aptitude install build-essential gtkglarea5-dev freeglut3-dev

I already had build-essential obviously, but I had to install the other two packages. You might need other dev files also, I don't know what I have installed really. The error messages won't tell you exactly what you need, but it is easy to find.

tar xfvz fsv-0.9.tar.gz
cd fsv-0.9/
./configure
make
make install

Run with "fsv".

I can't see a reason to use it, other than a graphical representation of the relative sizes of the contents of a directory. (.opera is the large by far directory in my home)
