Okay so I downloaded and installed Mandriva early today on a seperate partition along side ubuntu and windows xp. It seems to work fine except for a few issues. Compix and its 3D cube and other effects work great but I'm having some problems with the menu and random windows. For the menu when I first start up Mandriva and click on the window all I get is an outline of a box. If i exit it and click on it again I get the menu but none of the sub menus. After doing this maybe four or five times the problem stops happening and it works fine. For the windows every now and then ,seems to just happen randomly, I open a program and the window comes up but there is nothing inside of it. For example I would try to start kopete and it pops up but the window is blank or sometimes when I want to update my system the box where it asks for my password is blank and the only thing I can do is press enter and hope that it just closes. Does anyone have an idea as to how to fix this?

Try asking the offical mandriva forum maybe they can help

http://forum.mandriva.com/index.php

They are very helpful there anyways.

By 'blank' do you mean it's a completely blank 'black hole', or it's more sort of grey space? A screenshot might help - actually, take a picture of the screen with a digital camera.

I suspect a video driver issue. What's your video card? Thanks!

Thanks for the responses but I have already moved on and uninstalled Mandriva. The problem was kinda hard to explain as they were things you would expect from bugs in beta software. I don't think it was because of a faulty installation or corrupted iso because I downloaded it again checked the integrity and reinstalled with still the same problems afterwards. It could have just been my hardware I don't know nor will I ever know because I've moved on now maybe some time later I'll try it again.

Edit: @ Alienware User, yes I did try searching around on their forums and through google but I couldn't find anything
@ AdamWill, I thought about it being an issue with my video driver but I figured if compiz could work perfectly then why would I have had trouble with displaying a menu? Oh and my card is an ATI Radeon x600 but it doesn't matter much now I've distro hopped again.

Compiz features use the 3D bits of your card and driver; desktop drawing uses the 2D bits. The two are pretty distinct and it's certainly possible to have a situation where 2D rendering would be buggy, but 3D wouldn't. It might also have been interesting to see if the problem still happened if you turned 3D desktop off.
