View Full Version : [SOLVED] Desktop too large for screen on login

I have had Ubuntu installed for a while now (was 7.10, just upgraded to 8.04) but I still have a problem with the desktop upon logging in. 9 times out of ten, when I login, the desktop is too large to fit on the screen and scrolls when I mouse over the edges. I have to log out, then back in again and then it's fine. Is anyone able to help with this?
The resolution is 1280x1024 at 60hz. I used xvidtune to align the screen properly, so perhaps the problem is related to that? Here is the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf :

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Try removing the resolutions you don't use (like the 1400x1050@60)

You want to nuke this line.

Virtual 1400 1050

Great! Thank you - that seems to have fixed it!

I've had the same problem on my father's machine. Removing the Virtual line was the solution, but there was no GUI element to configure that.

Is there a setting in the Gnome resolution dialog or somewhere else that we can see the Virtual settings?
