I've been wondering what kind of users are attracted to Linux. Are we gruff old goats still in love with command lines, or are we a bunch of kids rebelling against the norm? How young is the Linux crowd? How many old folks are giving Ubuntu a shot?

41 here, going on 16. lol. zx81 was my first foray into computing.
those were the days, 600 lines of basic all typed up from a magazine
and the next thing you knew.........RAMPACK WOBBLE.........600 lines disappear never to be seen again. why have i turned to 'linux'? because its bloody better than what ive had to use, free and has free'd me from overpriced overhyped pap! all those guys who compile and design all the software, for linux, i could ever dream of have my undying respect and gratitude for what they do.

Yeah, well I'm four months old and know Basic, BASH, C, C++, Cobol, Lua and Perl.
And my Mother/Father Tongues are English/Polish...

:lolflag:

Not really. I'm 19.

Oh, and also, don't use horrible Debian puns to show-off your hate for Windows.
It's really not a good thing (or cool) to do...

I am 19 almost 20 now, and was 17 when I first used Ubuntu, same age when I first used Linux.

Hmm, I studied Unix post grad when Linus was still in school...

I use whatever works. At the moment, Linux works pretty darn well and for security it can't be beat.

18. I've been toying with *nixes for a couple years now. I started on ubuntu, went distro hopping like a madman for a while, and I've finally settled back with ubuntu.

My 5 year old brother runs FreeBSD + KDE on his desktop...

No kidding. He loves playing Frozen Bubble and kSameGame on the old Pentium II HP Pavilion I resurrected for him :lolflag:

Oh, her - I left her on account of my phobia of snakes. Fond memories, indeed, and a lovely garden, too.

Where i go to college, they advertize linux as the operating system you should use as a programmer. they wouldn't let you use windows in the labs. That was my first real experience with linux, so i decided it was about time to use the live-CD that my friend gave me. haven't really looked back since installing it.

I'm 26.
The first computer I used - 386
The first OS I used - DOS
The first Linux distro I used - Fedora (in 2004, yep I'm a young Linux user)
The last thing I would do - stop learning

I'm 19 now (April 20 1989)

Started using Linux in January 2006 with Linspire 5.0, started Ubuntu in March. I haven't had windows on either of my computers since a before Ubuntu 6.10 (bar my laptop which came vista-preinstalled and promptly removed).

It has actually gone to the stage where I do not like to use anything that is not Linux. Windows just annoys me, MacOS X is too controlled.

I'm 26, for the record.

I don't mind saying that despite using Linux, I don't do a lick of programming, nor do I want to. I may be geeky, but I just never got around to learning programming. Too busy playing soldier I guess.

In looking at the results here...I see two demographic types of Ubuntu users out there that are starting to stand out...

1. The "rebellious" teenager/college kid type...

2. The 35-45 year old guy that grew up playing with Commodore 64's and Apple II's.

I fall into the #2 category.

Now I wonder how that curve extends downward, and it seems like a few other posters have too... maybe I should have put a section in for kids to vote rather than adhering to the 'under 13' taboo.
