This is probably in the wrong forum, i think everything i post is... but here's my predicament...
I am looking for a new notebook pc for work (as far as the wifey knows :)) and I intend to run straight 100% pure ubuntu goodness on it, since my windows/ubuntu pc just died. I've been looking around to the big manufacturers (Dell, HP, Compaq) and not a whole lot peaks my interest... I play a whole lotta WoW, so it's not only for working.
I have found one that peaks my interest, Dell XPS 1530 (I think). It's got the proc. power, the vid card, the hd i need, and it comes in a plethora of colors :). Has anyone else got one of those? (I know dell makes ubuntu-loaded pc's now, but you can't really customize it and they aren't that much cheaper than the m$ ones.)
Or, else, has someone else used/seen a laptop that would fit my needs that runs ubuntu smooth as glass?
Thanks

Some of the XPS systems have heating problems, and they're generally a little overpriced. Also, there's a chance that things like bluetooth, webcam, etc won't work, or will only work partially.
I don't really do any gaming, especially on laptops, so afraid that's all I have for you. Tamoneya's link could prove good, Sys76 is a solid company. Although, if you do end up ordering for them, I'd ask about the possibility of replacing the RAM with something that runs at least at DDR2800.

Go with one of the cheaper HP laptops that have an Intel processor and wireless card. It should be enough for work.
P.S. I have the same desktop as you back home. You probably agree with me that the Radeon X200 is a piece of crap. :p

What is your target price range/budget? I haven't had any trouble with Ubuntu on my Thinkpad T61. I think it should even be possible to get Lenovo to not pre-install Windows on it if you call their sales line directly (I'm not entirely certain of this, especially since I know their policies have changed significantly over the last few years). Having said that, I know that Thinkpads do tend to be on the higher end of the laptop-price spectrum, but they also tend to last a fairly long time. Just my two cents.

Thinkpad. Superb build quality, almost 100% linux compatibility, and they are not as expensive as you may think (http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:expandcategory?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087¤t-category-id=8FA114A7D9FF4F38AE8E19B36EC665A7).

I bought a xps 1530 with Vista installed. I have set it up to dual boot Vista and Ubuntu. Runs great. Make sure you get one with the Intel wireless and the Nvidia 8600M.

The IBM Thinkpads are nice. They are what NASA use and such. They also have very good Linux support.

My goodness, thanks for the replies... Thinkpads are swell, is there any issues with hardware and ubuntu?
Also, the acer gemstone one looks hawt, but i'm willing to bet the extra keys on the left side of the keyboard won't work with ubuntu, anyone have any idea if this is true? or if it actually works?
Thanks again, thumps

Thinkwiki (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki) has a list of compatibilities and issues with installing a variety of distributions on Thinkpads. Here (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_8.04_(Hardy_Heron)_on_a_ThinkPad _T61#Items_that_don.27t_work_.28a.k.a.:_items_that _need_more_intense_tweaking_to_get_fixed.29) is an example of Gutsy on a T61.

I have 2 new Dell's last summer an XPS 1220 12inch and 9400 17 inch ( as a second desktop replacement for downstairs) both run Ubuntu superbly. I also have a Fujitsu Amilo 15 inch again brilliant with Ubuntu. All 3 are exellent with Ubuntu and I would buy them again.

Agreed :)
My new laptop is HP and all the hardware except the nic card and modem is Intel based and Ubuntu works flawlessly out of the box :)
