after the hacking problem i reinstalled then when hardy was released i reinstalled a fresh copy of 7.4 with a new user name / password then updated

today i when to log in and inputed my old user name and password and it logged me in any iders

Obviously the old user was not deleted. Do you want to delete him/her?

the only user of the pc is me i looked in user accounts and there is only mine there and when i did the fresh install i choice a new password and user name that was very different to the old one so how was i able to log in with the old username

This is not possible. You either didn't do a clean install (=>did not format the drive) or else you chose a new drive for you ubuntu system and you still login to your old... Once the disk is formatted how is ubuntu supposed to recover a user from it?

You may be right though but if so...terrible bug...
