Have anyone try it?

I've installed it but there's no menu entries at the usual location (Applications>>Office), so I have to manually run the program under /opt/ folder. Might try to create the shortcuts myself if there's no other way to automatically insert them in the menu.

So far it seems lighter and faster, and I definitely love this:

You will need to create the shortcuts yourself, but it is pretty easy.

I've been running OOo3-dev for a while now and it really does feel much more light-weight than OOo 2.X. It's also been surprisingly robust throughout the time I've been using it. I haven't touched 2.4 at all in the last 3 weeks and have been using 3 for all my office tasks.

Judging by the 'tip of the iceberg' screenshot that ShodanjoDM has displayed
more good things are set to come from OpenOffice.

If you check out some of the plans they have, it sounds like there are some great new features coming including PDF import to complement the existing PDF export feature. I think I recall reading that OOo Base will also gain the ability to read/import MS Access databases. This is good news for users already heavily committed to Microsoft tools, but want to make the move to a different toolset.

It's a shame it defaults to the KDE or Gnome themes instead of the new icons, since they are superior :D

The new starterthingy is neat, and it just feels a lot more responsive than 2.x ever did. Good job, keep it coming!

Thanx it's working perfectly, main difference is speed. It starts 10 times faster :)

As far as I can see Base still only supports ODF databases and no access though :(

I hope OOo No 3.0 is finished, or in a stable beta state like firefox 3 beta 5, when ubuntu 8.10 comes out :)

Last I heard slated release is in September. The final 3.0 should make it into 8.10.

They're all under /opt/openoffice.org3/program/ folder. Navigate to the folder, and you can run them from the terminal by typing (for launching writer, for example): ./swriter

Or make your own shortcuts like this one:

Yes the only gripe I have about the user interface right now is that when adding extensions it shoudl default back to the extension folder your installing extensions form as I load multiple extensions..

I have not been in the rest of user interface yet..

GTK themes bad? I do not see your screenshot with your theme yet, do I? :)

Just kidding, as yo do not have the 64-bit binary package to install yet..

I did the command (the "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" thing) from earlier in the thread. Maybe I should do it again? It should install stuff in the same directory, right?

There may be new dependencies. If you install with dpkg -i it won't install them for you, and will instead just error out for that package (and possibly those that follow, I don't know how it breaks on error, it may stop bash execution, may not)

Works pretty well! way better than Oo.org 2.x
I hope they do change the interface in some way, not copy MS or something but innovate. After all change is good.
Perhaps if they make it skinnable, it would be brilliant isn't it?
And add one feature: this feature NO office suite has, import articles from Wikipedia without those links and references.

The OpenOffice.org Community is pleased to announce that the public beta release of OpenOffice.org 3.0 is now available. This beta release is made available to allow a broad user base to test and evaluate the next major version of OpenOffice.org, but is not recommended for production use at this stage.

If you are a regular user of OpenOffice.org, here's a great opportunity to help us make the next release the best ever.

Ok, well I'm not a noob, no offense but I probably know more about linux than you do, so I know how to compile stuff. My question was where i would FIND the source files to compile it or 64-bit versions of the debs. Your information was not useful in any sense of the word. As to why I run 64-bit, look for any thread in these forums about the advantages and disadvantages, and then ask me.

hello,

i've done the steps above:
decompressed and installed all the debs with dpkg -i *.deb
it all went wel no errors and i also checked the md5sum
but when i try to run it i get this:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/opt/openoffice.org3/program$ ./swriter
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/../basis-link/ure-link/bin/javaldx: error while loading shared libraries: libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
ubuntu@ubuntu:/opt/openoffice.org3/program$

is there someone who can help me? i don't have java installed maybe that has to do with it? and witch package do i have to download?
The weird thing is that libuno_sal.so.3 is in opt/openoffice.org/ure/lib. I installed also openoffice.org-java-common but it didn't help. My keyboard is azerty dont know if that has to do with it?

The source files are available at the same place: http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta/

There are multiple packages, and I'm not really sure whether dependencies etc are an issue.

If you successfully compile, I'd be glad to know which order you managed it.

Alright, I'll think I'll try that. I'm used to compiling code anyway, I run compiz, kiba-dock, and epiphany with webkit (testing purposes), which are all compiled and updated via either git or svn. I will report back if/when I succeed.

Well this sure is challenging. I got the configuring done, after resolving all the strange dependencies. Now I'm stuck, I have no idea how to compile this sucker. The folder structure is really confusing. Does anyone know how to compile it after you have configured it correctly?
P.S. This is one of the most annoying things I've compiled on linux, up there with firefox and gecko, or compiling a custom kernel.
EDIT: I started a thread to hopefully address this problem here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4929193#post4929193).

Get the sources and compile from that. Why are you using 64 bit anyway?

Because 64-bit is the future, and many of us have 4GB or more of memory.

i'm really liking the new beta and would like to remove OOo2, but am afraid that it will remove dependencies that the beta version needs. is there a simple way to remove OOo2 without hosing the beta?

anybody?

anybody?

Why don't you try and uninstall OO2? If it breaks OO3, you could just reinstall OO2 with a few clicks/commands.

removing OOo 2 doesn't touch OOo 3, I've done the same.

Well, I gave in and forced the install via
dpkg -i --force-architecture *.debEverything seems to be working, except the fiel browser and some other things look a little funky. If anyone successfully builds it on 64-bit please tell me. You can see how far I got in my thread here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4929193#post4929193).

If you force dpkg, can you still uninstall in the future? I might do the same, but don't want to be left with a permanent 32-bit package if a genuine 64-bit version comes out in the future.

I downloaded the final v3 x64 debs from the openoffice site and installed via sudo dpkg -i *.deb and it works fine. This is on Hardy. The problem is the package manager pops up wants to do a partial upgrade which is to remove all the openoffice components. Until I do that I cannot use the package manager again. Anyone know a workaround for this?
