Could someone please help a new user?

Since installing Ubuntu Hardy Heron last week the hard disk has made a 'grating' or rumbling type sound just before it stops, probably like the HD heads not parking (my assumption).

I have replaced the HD with a brand new one, problem still happens. I have found some posts which say that parking of the disk was a problem in an earlier version of Ubuntu and with a old kernel (I don't know what this is)

I'm worried that my new HD will now be damaged, what can I do. I have no linux experience. Maybe I should try a different distribution, but I have spent a lot of time so far on this and want to make it work!

Thanks in anticipation:)

Does the problem replicate with 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon? Or even worse, with a windoze OS?

Oops - I think I've found the problem after blaming Ubuntu. Believe it's a rumbling bearing in one of the case fans!

Apologies for not checking this first
