Ubuntu 7.10 x64 Live CD
Intel Core 2 Quadro Q6600 on GA-P35-DS4 motherboard, 2x2048MB RAM

The kernel loading screen pops up for a few seconds, I get "kernel alive | kernel direct mapping table..." message and suddenly the system restarts. I believe the CD to be fine as it already worked previously with another PC. The computer is new, with Windows Vista installed and working good so far.

Bump. Any ideas?

With Vista; you have to allocate free space for Ubuntu first. You cannot partition with the Ubuntu CD. What are your completes specs, including video card?

Note that the error occurs when simply trying to run the live-cd. I have some hard drive space unpartitioned - is it possible to somehow install Ubuntu manually, without booting the system?

Install with the Alternate amd64 CD.

Unfortunately I don't have the means of obtaining such a large file at the moment. Could you at least tell me whether using the standard latest Ubuntu 8.x CD will solve the problem or not?

A Live CD will not do it. You need the Alternate. Sorry.
