post-8.04 update manager freezes

8.04 upgraded successfully, works fine, now some days later I get the update glyph and I run update manager, it finds about 20 updates (applications) and I say, update me. At that point it just freezes solid, the box greys out and I don't get even the password-request box. I have to use system manager to kill the task.

Machine is a Dell 4600 that's been running Ubuntu for quite a while; another box (Compaq) has been upgraded to 8.04 and updates fine.

Synaptic works fine so I wouldn't think it's the repos.

I've tried this several times of the day, no dice.

And at this point it hung -- I terminated it, finally. So it can't get to the archive. But I can ping 91.189.88.45 and it gives normal responses, so I'm not sure what to do next.

I will, although I've tried it a couple of times over several days and I get the same result -- but I have another machine that's updated in the meantime with no problem.

I was having the same problem myself, but I just found the answer at the bottom of this thread:

Problem solved.

Turns out that the localhost setting in /etc/hosts was incorrect. The fix is going to menu ' System', then 'Administration', then 'Network'. Select the tab Hosts, enter password in dialog box, then change the localhost name:

127.0.0.1 PCName.networkName

to

127.0.0.1 PCName

and save it. Done. Whole problem gone. Interestingly, Bug #195308 confirms the same problem. Hope this small issue gets fixed before the Apr 21 release as it was nasty while it lasted.

OK, now that I looked closer at my hosts file, I see I used to have two lines that looked like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 PCNAME.NETWORKNAME

and I simply removed the ".NETWORKNAME" part. Note the second line has a different IP address than the first. You should probably put the localhost line back and try making the second line like mine.

Obviously an issue and it's fixed for me, but the second thread noted:

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Thank you everyone for your help - you pointed me into the problem area. The line in question WAS required but should not have had .mshome on the end

But that's a little different from my solution, which has 127.0.0.1 with localhost aliased with the PCName, and then 127.0.1.1 seems to take the network ID in it just fine. Oh well, maybe there's some interaction with the network ID parameter which is specified elsewhere!

Hope all this is useful to others, too . . .

did some messing around and got my that hostname changed to something like

myservername 127.0.0.1

and couldn't get update to work, but thanks to you guys, it now works

Unencumbered by any actual knowledge...

All my machines are set up with:

127.0.0.1 PCName localhost
127.0.1.1 PCName
ur.192.168.ip.addr PCName

3rd line should only be added if you are using a static IP address.

This will allow 'PCName' to showup instead of 'localhost' in a couple places where I had been seeing "localhost".

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

I had the same problem. It seems something (an update/install? possibly the LAMP server package I added?) appended <.Domain> to every instance of <PCName> in the Hosts file. This leads to the system being unable to resolve <PCName> by itself to 127.0.0.1 (e.g. if you're having this problem, open a terminal, type 'sudo', and you'll get an 'unable to resolve <PCName>' error)

The solution of updating the hosts file by adding <PCName> to the 127.0.0.1 line (and/or the 127.0.1.1 line) will work (you can leave <PCName.Domain> on the same line(s) if you want, it won't hurt). The tricky part for me was that editing this through the GUI (System>Administration>Network>Hosts) didn't work. Even though it seems that you can unlock the Hosts tab, it doesn't really unlock because of the system's inability to resolve <PCName> - the exact same reason why the Update Manager freezes in the first place. Of course, this doesn't generate any error messages in the GUI: Instead of freezing like Update Manager, the edits are simply discarded when you exit the Network panel.

What worked for me was editing /etc/hosts by hand. Of course, I couldn't do it by launching the text editor directly because saving the changes didn't work (it needs to resolve <PCName> to prompt for the password to allow saving, which of course it can't). Instead, I had to open a terminal window and type:

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

While this still generated a 'can't resolve <PCName>' error, it did prompt me for my password, then opened /etc/hosts in gedit and allowed me to save the changes.

Nasty little bug. I wonder how it would be resolvable if it became a total catch-22 situation where you needed to resolve <PCName> in order to edit hosts in order to be able to resolve <PCName>!

my situation is similar to you in the respect that I also keep getting the " cannot resolve" message when I type "sudo" in the terminal. However I am still able to operate after inputting my password. I was also able to edit my Hosts through the System>admn menu and also via the gedit in terminal. However I am still experiencing both problems a) unable to resolve b) update manager freezing. Here is what my hosts file looks like:

Also the update manager freezes when I click on "Install Updates", it has no problems checking for them.
