Fresh install of Hardy
How do I go about getting the proper nvidia driver for my 9600GT?

I've looked through Synaptic but not sure what to choose there. Nvidia web site does not let me find a driver through firefox.

Also, my video card fan is spinning fast and is noisy (but not so in Windows which this PC is dual-booting). Hoping to find a way to calm it down! :)

You will need the Nvidia driver found here:-

Thanks for that. However my system is x64 (sorry I should have mentioned)

I've been hacking at it for an hour or so, not getting far though. I used Synaptic to add nvidia-settings, nvidia-xconfig, nvidia-glx-new (not sure if I've spelt that right) plus Envy-core. Envy-core didn't work so I tried envy-gtk which did run but refused to install the driver, said something about the API being unstable.

I am now installing envy-gt which required about 50 files installing.... will report back

It WORKED! Man what a job, just to get the right video.
My video card fan is also quiet for the first time in days, phew!
