I just built a computer and have a huge problem.

If I start Ubuntu from the livecd, everything is too big and I have to move the mouse to the edge of the screen to pan around.

If I start in safe graphics mode, it works fine. Until I install and restart. Then, it shows me a GDM error, says it's respawning and dies. The only graphics I see are the bootup logo and progress bar, then the shutdown ones.

The mobo is a Biostar k8m800. I'm lost. Any suggestions.

If it helps, I'm better than average with Linux, but new to Ubuntu.

why don't you try the text based installer?

It dies when I restart. After it's been installed. Not during the install. The install goes fine as long as I start in safe graphics mode.

Inexplicably, Ubuntu now works. Makes absolutely no sense to me, but it works. Thanks anyway, to everyone.
