I have tried converting a AVI file to a playable DVD file and have failed.
I have used Devede and it worked fine at converted, but it won't play on the DVD player. I t also took over four hours to convert.
I also used Avidex and it convertedd the file but unable to burn onto a dvd.

Can any one please help. I want to be free of windows.

I use tovid and todisc for all my conversion and menu making

it has an extremely easy command line plus GUI
it's not in synaptic but here is the installation guide

http://tovid.wikia.com/wiki/Installing_tovid/Ubuntu

Ive never had any problems with tovid that I didn't cause on my own

I'd be happy to post a command line guide for you to follow if you need it

good luck

You may want to search for the devede patch, it fixes problems with sound and some other issues. It may help.

I have tried using TOVID with negative results.
The file appearantly converted and i burned the ISO into a DVD.
When attempted to pay it in a DVD player, I kept getting an invalid disk error.

I then tried WinFF, which seemed more GUI friendly. Again the file was converted to MPEG video file. I burned it onto a DVD and it did not work.

I think there is another step I need to do before ripping a DVD.
Can anyone help...
