View Full Version : Best Free MUD Client - With Automapper

Hey all, I'm getting back into old-school MUD's, but not happy with having to go to most MUD websites to launch them via Java. I'd much rather use an outside program, that I can organize and such. And possibly most importantly, I'd like a good Automapper available to it.
So what's the best MUD client out there that has a good Automapper either pre-equiped, or available through use of plugins/add-ons?

zMud in wine or kmuddy but kmuddy does not yet have an automapper. With Hardy zMud does not run there is a bug report with Wine for it

I'd prefer that it be Native. And it has to be free. :O

I recommend tintin++ (http://tintin.sourceforge.net/). It's also in the repos. I know it has automapping, though I can't say I've ever used it.

:O It does? *Does some checking*
Ah, yup! Great, I'll test it out a bit.
Any other recommendations (Or thumbs up for TinTin++)? I like to shop around. :3

The Gnome-Mug automapper was pretty painful last time I tried to use it, though. I remember it mapping directions I typed even when I couldn't go to them.
Even most free Windows MUD programs don't have a good automapper.

KMuddy does have a mapper. It's just not an auto one... heh.
It depends on your MUD. If you're trying out any of the IRE muds, all of them have a proxy, cross-platform mapper available. I'm involved in the one for Achaea (and use KMuddy as my mud client).

I think Gnome Mud has been in development limbo since 2005 or so. I still say go with TinTin++ ;)

TinTin++ is very good, but some people prefer a graphical interface. :)

Kmud (http://www.kmud.de) is quite good. It has a graphical interface with automapping.
Here is the complete list of features:
* connection wizard / profiles;
* automapper;
* aliases;
* triggers (also color-triggers, regex support);
* input history (with intelligent browsing);
* split screen in view history scrollback;
* numpad walking;
* speed walking;
* ansi/vt100 support with color customising;
* alternative input line & multiline input;
* logging facility;
* programmable toolbar;
* auto login / auto reconnect;
* MCCP (mud client compression protocol) support;
* plugin interface.
Download the binary version (kmud-1.0-linux-i386.tar.gz) and go on.

It's unmaintained though.
KMuddy now has the mapper and basically went on to do more.

can kmuddy be run in gnome?
yes, it will just install a lot of kde libraries, which some people try to avoid on gnome... it is not a big problem, just a matter of hard disk space :)
and i would check out mudlet (http://www.mudlet.org/), its going to be the new mud client to beat them all... at least it is under heavy and recent development

Yes i having been keeping up with mudlet. For the time being I have been using portalGT under wine. Its okay with a lot of features and a mapper. I started with Kildclient which would be excellent for me if it had a mapper. I have tintin++ installed as well as tinyfugue and will use those on occasion. I just wish i could take a little from this one and that one to make a nice solid client that i would enjoy using.
Has anyone tried Mudlet yet and if so first thoughts?

I started MUDs only recently, so I am also looking for a good client.
Because I am working in a Gnome environment, I started with GNOME-mud, it is nice and got me logged on. I started to use its Automapper... not nice, it will log where you can't go, so you have to constantly check it...
KildClient was suggested, so I installed it today and will give it a try.
I also installed Mudlet, and will give that a try.
Is there maybe somebody who tied these and can give some feedback?
Thanks.

After toying with a ton of different MUD clients. tintin++ is by far the best IMO.

Jip I have to agree, tintin++ looks very powerful, but I am still very new to this world of muding, and it is difficult to learn everything that is associated with the 'world'/mud as well as to learn a new mud client. Tintin++ was just to overwhelming, I had to spent a lot of time to try and figure it out, and spend less time figuring out the MUD... :confused:
I will def give it a try again when I am more familiar with muding in general. :idea:

kildclient is the next best one IMHO. it's the only GTK client that's still actively developed.

I gave up on the ones above... I am using MUSHclient (Free :guitar:) through Wine at the moment.
But I am still looking for an automapper function.
I would still like to try Tintin++ Is there someone that struggled through the getting started phases?
Maybe there is a nice Newbie How to for TT++ somewhere? How to create all the relevant "files"/plugins to connect to the mud, how to create additional windows (e.g to put all chats in there), and how to setup the automapper, and use it.
Thanks for any help.

I would also be interested in a starter guide for tintin++. Seems like it works from all these comments but if I can't even get it running then someone/somewhere should be able to help me.

I honestly don't have the patient to learn tintin++ right now, though it does look super powerful... I've recently gotten back into mudding an have been trying out various clients. I *like* kildclient & mudlet both... but neither has automap/speedwalk which sucks. And gnomemud just needs work, period... zmud unfortuantly doesn't run to well in wine which is a bummer (I have a reg code cause' I actually paid for it yrs ago;P. Mushclient on the other hand works wonderfully in wine... so thats likely to be my prefferred client for a while at least...
ennui.

Hmmm I was really hoping to find a client that had a graphical mapper for gnome. I like kildclient but no mapper hurts. also for somereason the text colors are funny for me with tintin. while every other client I try has color uniformity between them. is this due to a terminal setting?
