Update 3d problems ati

Ive upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 and i cannot run anything that uses 3d apps as it just crahes and I have to hard reboot. It sometimes crashes when I run glxgears or fglrxinfo aswell at times. 3d was working under 7.10. Also Im not looking into running compiz so its not enabled.
There are two different crashes it seems to do.... One is the screen goes black and then nothing happens after that as it locks up. The other is the screen just locks while loading the app and nothing else happens. In both cases the only way to fix it is to hard reboot.

Ive got an ati mobility 9700 graphics card in my laptop.

Seems that it also has these crashes with Video files. Can any1 help me at all?
