Hi all,

I use Ubuntu 8.04 at home with a broadband connection.

When I help my friends (who do not have an Internet connection) to add packages to their Ubuntu computers, I copy the appropriate .deb packages from my /var/cache/apt/archives folder to the same location on their computers.

The hassle I'm having is making these new packages show up in Synaptic (on their computers) so I can easily install them. I can't click the Reload button as their computers have no Internet connection.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. John R.

you could try something like nonetdebs (http://nonetdebs.homeip.net/)
or you can use synaptic package manager on your friends system to generate a package download script which you can run on your system to download all the updates/upgrades that they want.
You can follow this old howto from http://beans.seartipy.com/2006/11/03/simple-way-to-update-ubuntu-edgy-with-slowno-internet-connection/

Thanks for your reply. I do appreciate it.

I finished up using remastersys (terrific, as it creates a new live CD/DVD based on your system plus any packages you've downloaded). My next project is to get the DVD contents onto a USB stick to allow me to install onto PCs that don't have a DVD drive. CD drives can't handle the 800Mb ISO that remastersys creates.

Best regards,

John
