ubuntu 8.04 plays only AC3 no PCM over spdif

My card is connected to the DAC via spdif. I had no problem with Gutsy and have just upgraded to Hardy. Now I can only play files with AC3 (mplayer). Alsamixer runs fine and I have set 100% on all channels. Still no sound.

I have noticed that a lot of packages were deleted after upgrade, like amarok, may be I am still missing something?

it seems like alsa is not configured/not functional in any way. I do not see any alsa modules in lsmod, amarok-xine could not configure no sound driver... but kaffeine plays movies with dolby sound just fine.
