View Full Version : What font do you use?

Mazza558
May 4th, 2008, 01:58 PM
I think one of the most important aspects of a desktop is its fonts. So, what font do you think looks the best? Do you stick with Sans or do you try others?

I'm using the small Liberation Sans, which looks very similar to the fonts used on Windows, but I prefer any small fonts myself.

You're free to attach a screenshot of the text to show everyone (though the emphasis is on fonts, not the overall look - we already have a desktop thread).

EDIT: Just realised there's already a thread on this. :(

I currently use Futura Book, size 9, light hinting. Itjust happens to be the exact same font they used for the decoration of my HP laptop. Lucky me.

My other other two favs are MgOpen Cosmetica and Segoe UI, with similar settings.

msttcorefonts (Microsoft TrueType core fonts):
Times New Roman and or Verdana.

They render well on a high proportion of web sites.

Verdana I believe is supposed to the best readable font ...

Like I said in another thread my favorite by far is defiantly 'Uni3-Terminus16' but it just seems to want to not work. (Though I think it's only to be used with the terminal...but oh well.)
Here's a screenshot of the beautiful font.

Droid Sans (the Google Android font) with

Smoothing > Subpixel
Hinting > Slight

Before Droid I used DejaVu Sans Condensed (from ttf-dejavu-extra). I switched to Droid for two reasons:

1. The Greek script of DejaVu (I'm Greek) does not look very good.
2. Some non-GTK apps (e.g., Firefox) do not pick up the Condensed variety, and use DejaVu Sans Book instead.

For monospace I use various fonts. In Gedit I use Consolas (from Microsoft Vista).

[QUOTE=demetrisk;4881884]Droid Sans (the Google Android font) with

...

How did you get Droid Sans to work with the system themes? I've installed the droid fonts three times and whenever I try and use it I get the generic Sans Serif font instead of Droid Sans. I know it's installed correctly as it works perfectly in Open Office and is visible in all the font selection drop downs.

The Liberation fonts are nice. Liberation Mono is my least favorite (I don't like the dotted zero), but it's usable, and I could easily use Liberation Sans as my default font. I do use Liberation Serif as my default font in Firefox.

What I actually use: Luxi Sans & Luxi Mono (subpixel/full hinting/autohinter)

They're available in the package ttf-xfree86-nonfree.

Here is my .fonts.conf :

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- ~/.fonts.conf for per-user font configuration -->
<fontconfig>

<!--
Define serif, sans, mono
-->
<alias>
<family>serif</family>
<prefer>
<family>DejaVu Serif</family>
<family>ChosunilboNM</family>

</alias>

<alias>

</alias>

<match target="font">
<edit name="antialias" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>

</fontconfig>

I use 'DejaVu' fonts for all type of Latin alphabets. I also use CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) fonts, to select these font manually I should made .fonts.conf file on my home folder.

I use 'ChosunilboNM' for Serif CJK fonts which made by Chosun-ilbo Korean newspaper. And Sans-serif fonts are Windows vista default CJK fonts. And CJK monospace font is 'Naver Dictionary' which made by Naver Korean portal site.

And I turn on 'antialias' and 'autohint' manually to makes every fonts look smoothly.

Lucida Grande and Lucida Console for the terminal.

Tuffy has barely been mentioned so I would like to explicitly list it too. Most fonts are either readable or look good - in several years of my search for a font fulfilling both requests Tuffy is the best font I ever came across ! It features a unique style, provides a great quality with regards to hinting / smoothing / spacing and is always a joy to look at while being pefectly readable as well.

Its the one font that may be my font forever.

Is there some setting I'm missing for Dejavu fonts? Because to me they look horrific. Size 10 is too big compared to FreeSans/Liberation Sans...

I like FreeSans the most overall, but the bold version has some serious spacing issues.

I have some really nice fonts on my computer, but for some reason, I cannot use them for my theme, because when I apply them, they appear higher than they are supposed to. Like Optima, for example. It's a great font, but it doesn't show up correctly. :(

Anyway, I'm experimenting with EngraversGothic BT right now. I thought I'd try a small caps font.

Alternate between Patched Terminus, Montecarlo and profont for urxvt. Terminus for framebuffer. DejaVu Sans Condensed most of the times for fluxbox ui, although try out Segoe family once in a while, and artwiz family when using dark themes.
