I am taking a college class in Java programming. What is the best way I can get started early?

Maybe check out Sun's tutorials: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/
Or, maybe you could try figuring out your prescribed text book is and get it early and have a bit of a read though.

Awesome. The amount of sources for finding programming information is almost overwhelming. Thanks for narrowing it down.

once you've got the basics down i can recommend two books:

SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide (Exam 310-055) (Certification Press Study Guides)--Sierra & Bates
ISBN-13: 978-0072253603

and, once you've read that:

Effective Java (2nd Edition)--Bloch
ISBN-13: 978-0321356680

both are excellent books.

I just got my book for this class. I start in exactly one week. The book is called Big Java. It looks pretty good and is introducing me to many new things.

Ivor Horton's Beginning Java is good. Here's the first 28 pages Introducing Java in pdf: http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/44/07645687/0764568744.pdf
