lost power during update

Hi everybody,
Today I installed Gutsy Gibbon on my wife's desktop. After installation from CD rebooted, logged in, everything perfect. Started update mngr and downloaded 2.5 hours worth of updates. These all downloaded OK and then when the system was 90% through the process of installing these updates......power went of in the district.(Grrrr#$%^&*()After it came on I started the computer, got through the log-on screen and then Blank, nothing, system just sits. Is there anyway of 1.starting the system and 2.saving all these updates. I can get the grub and a terminal on initial start of course.
Any help much appreciated
