Hey there, I'm very interested in Ubuntu, and have downloaded it. My Hash is perfect, and I verified my burn. But when I try to install and/or run the Demo, this is what happens:

The Ubuntu logo goes up, with an orange bar moving left and right.
After a minute the Ubuntu bar loads up, and after that my screen flashed with a cursor (text cursor) and then my monitor says, "No Signal"

So now I decide, ok the installer is going, so I wait for 20 minutes, and the DVD has long since stopped making noise. So I try my monitor, turn it off and on, jab a few keys on my inactive keyboard (which normally works), and click my mouse randomly. When I randomly click my mouse the DVD goes on spinning, but I still see nothing...

So does this mean Ubuntu is there, but I can't see it and my keyboard isn't working with it?

And lastly, can someone help me fix this?

Sincerely,

TedM

hmm, you seem to have what ubuntu needs.
did you try the alternate install CD?

TedM
May 4th, 2008, 06:24 AM
No I did not, what is the difference? And I searched the forum, a couple other people had this problem, and it was never fixed. If I had to choose a different Linux OS, what would be the next best choice? Debian or the like?

well lets not be hasty, lets try the alternate CD before doing anything else.
the alternate CD is basically the same as the live CD but made for computers that might not work with the official live.
It has a more primitive installer on it but it might work for you.

As it just so happens, I had an alternate CD downloaded as well. No, I get the same error.

hmm, well then maybe another distribution might be in your future.
I personally recommend Linux mint, its based on ubuntu but often fixes some bugs that the ubuntu team misses.
or if you can deal without desktop effects try Mepis linux.
Both have served me well when ubuntu failed.

Okay, well I will be back in 6 months to get the updated Ubuntu, but until then, I've heard good things about Mandriva.

So while I'm saying bye, I'll be back.

Sincerely,

TedM - Have a great day!

I had something similiar happen to me once. I rebooted gnome (ctrl-alt-backspace) and it hasn't happened since. I had Ubuntu installed at the time though, but it's worth a try.

mandriva is another good one, but please stop by as we can still probably help you out.
I am really digging mandriva 2008 spring myself, and I am kind of torn hehheh

I know it sound obvious but have you tried safe graphics mode from the live cd screen

that is a another good option, but if he feels mandirvia might be better let him try it.
Nothing wrong with mandriva, personally I have been really liking both the 2008 versions both fall and spring...
the best mandrivas in a long time, its almost as good as ubuntu in my experience with the exception of the community...

Nope, but I'm adding a thanks to you both.

well its appreciated.
But as i said dont be afraid to ask here with questions, we still might be able to help you even if you use mandriva.
I have used mandriva for a little while myself so I know some of its ins and outs.

Mandriva is good, there are no doubts about it
It was the first distro I tried though I kept using its live cd and never installed it

Nothing seems to work. I guess Ubuntu doesn't like my computer is all.

Oh and a small question for Mandriva, what version should I get? And it is a big difference between the payware version?

oh yes, its gotten a lot better over the last year.
I would rank mandriva like fourth of linux distros, if only the community wasnt as lackluster.

thats how it is sometimes, that is why there are so many choices out there.
when option a doesnt work use option b.

as for what version of mandriva to use, just go for the mandriva one and ignore powerpack... you really dont need it.
you can still get multimedia working on it with the free version, the commercial version is alright but only if you got the $$$
mandriva one should do nonetheless

Yeah the community does seem cruddy over there. BTW did you catch my last EDIT?

Cliché. :)

Well, I've got that One CD download going. I'll be sure to be back in a couple months to see if the new release will work with my computer. We'll see... but wow I'm getting top notch download speeds on their torrent.

Well, 2:08AM here in Canada, I'm off to bed. Have a nice life everyone, Merry Spring! (Sorry about that, it's just we had a really long Winter this year. It's been sunny for only about a week here...)

Sincerely,

TedM

hey its all about choice and that is what linux is about.
ubuntu is not perfect, and neither is mandriva as all have their little quirks.
and if mandriva fails, try some of the others.
Like I said I recommend Mepis and Mint, they are not as high profile as mandriva or ubuntu but both have great communities (the mepis community especially, they got me out of many a pickle)
