No pulseaudio sound on Hardy

I just did an upgrade to HH on a laptop with an Intel audio chip.

If I go to sound preferences and run the sound playback test under autodetect or pulseaudio I get no sound. I do get sound if I select OSS,

How can I debug this?

Haven't gotten any responses.

Let me add that I get no login sound, and mplayer, vlc, and xine give no sound. Mythtv does give sound, so presumably it goes right to OSS.

Help!
