..automatic updates recently installed 2.6.24-17 ... this boots up fine but then my wireless (broadcom) card does not work and neither does the sound... same problems aren't present in 2.6.24-16 ... which works fine..so for now im booting into it... just a q though... how do i fix this? .. i mean isnt the latest kernel supposed to be the most stable/secure?

Why not build the 2.6.24-17 kernel from souces and add missing options? I'm not sure it will work, but you could try ;) .

I can read on the web that the 2.6.24-17 kernel is in "proposed" repository, not in the "update" one. So, I think it's better to remove the "proposed" repository from your sources.list, and then stay with the "current" ubuntu kernel : 2.6.24-16.
