Hi what is the best video conversion gui for ubuntu?

You could try Winff (ffmpeg GUI frontend), not in the repositories, but works pretty well. http://www.winff.org/
Technically there is no 64-bit version, but I have it working fine here.

ok i have installed that but what bitrate should i use? im converting a wmv file which is of a comedy show so how would i get the best quality? (its rougly 350mb's in size now so i dont want it much bigger. im converting to xvid)

Well, what is the bitrate of the original file? I would suggest usign a similar bitrate to reduce the inherent loss of quality in conversion.

its ok i found a bitrate calculator:lolflag: oh erm do you know of any avi info programs like gspot in windows? if not don't worry you've been really helpful

Hmm, I can't think of anythign off the top of my head, but when I want information like that, I jsut play it in vlc, go to view > stream and media info, it has some pretty detailed information there.
EDIT: Just found another tool called "Mediainfo" http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en I haven't tried it yet though.

I just downloaded and tried mediainfo, it is simple, but seems to do what you are looking for. Hope that helps.
EDIT: Btw, there is a GUI version if you didn't see that initially, I didn't, and it's much nicer to use than the command line version.
