Well, I was at a family gathering. And the excitement was dying down, so I pulled out my laptop. I was showing some people a composition I made, when another person I know overheard. He thought the software was really cool, and wanted to know where I got it from (he likes to play with music). Well, I thought about it, and I realized there's no open source notation programs for linux (at least at the time I switched, that being one of the main reasons why I switched). So, I happened to have an .iso of 8.04 on my machine, and I got a disc and burnt him a copy. I showed him what he needed to do. Well, he seemed excited enough. But I hope he doesn't kill his machine with it.

Why would it kill his machine?

well he can't blame you if it nukes his windows partition since it warns you. you can either read or you can't.

That is not how the real world works. In the real world, the technician, manufacturer, friend, new software, etc, is to blame in 100% of the cases if the user makes a mistake.

More like the user blames them even if the user is the one at fault.

That is how it works. It doesn't make sense, and makes things difficult, but that is the way it is.

Who cares? It might prompt him even more to try to get Ubuntu installed :D

Well, I just spoke to him. He installed if form the windows install (I don't know how it works, because I just did an updgrade. I heard that it doesn't partition you drive, but simply puts them on the same partition, if that's the case, how does it do that?), and it works great for him. Somehow he got into the command line, and was really nervous, and his phone died. When I called back, he was back to gnome, and poof, his phone died again... Oh well, I hope he's still good.

Oh, and the resion I'm nervios is because he's NOT the type to read. He'll just click next, next, next, install. Unless your sitting next to him, telling him not to (which is why I'm happy for the uninstall feature, that I haven't seen yet, just in case he does mess up the ubuntu install and wants to go back to complete windows).

If you can't learn, you have to feel.
Blindly clicking Next is dangerous....

I doubt it.
Sounds to me as if he is on a cellphone, at quite a distance from the towers. His phone keeps fading out that way. Of course, that is only speculation.

I blame modern "Liberalism" as it seems to have a core value of "It's not your fault".

You know, most folks have to take a driver's ed class, and pass some kind of test before they're given a license to operate a motor vehicle.

And yet, we'll let anyone and everyone hop on a computer, which is far more advanced and technical, without any training or licensure to ensure they know what they're doing.

Boggles the mind.

(I'm not referring to you, Tbol, I'm referring to your friend.)

I think it's because when you're driving a car, you can inadvertently kill someone. With a computer, they don't know they can inadvertently destory their data... after all, how often does the average computer user format their hard drive? Besides the wizards on Windows just require you to hit 'next' 'next' 'next' and the Ubuntu installer doesn't look ALL that different from the Windows wizard. Well okay, it does look different for us, but maybe not for the average user.

Amen! The fact George Bush got re-elected is proof... well at least here in the United States.

<------ Didn't vote for Bush for First Time least of all the second.

A computer may be more advanced then a car but your not likely to kill someone with it.

*sirens go off* oops accidently remotely launched a missle :p

When I installed Gutsy, I accidentally wiped the partition with XP on, and you kow what, it was the best mistake I've made, Ubuntu is excellent, there's no crapware/unwanted gear with it.

Now I have Hardy and I'm really liking it, so mistakes made by people ain't generally all that bad (in my case at least) lol.

I presume those people making half-baked digs at "liberalism" are actually complaining about socialism, except they think socialism is communism, and communism is devil worship.

What music notation software are you using?

I am currently using Noteworthy under wine but would like to move over to an open source program.
