New to Ubuntu and Linux. I followed the instructions for obtaining a copy of Ubuntu 8.04 from the site and have used several cd's. None of them get 100% on the cd check and when I try to install, I get a very long list of error codes. I am using infrarecorder to burn the cd like is posted. Any suggestions?

What software are you using to burn the iso? When I have had difficulty like this, I am usually able to solve it by burning at the slowest speed available. High speed burns many times create errors on iso burns.

check the MD5 sum of the iso your burning ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#head-cc4057205f46f3da4e36ee1974c50c51bd89ed24 ), then burn it at a really low speed(4x should be good enough, but if you are always getting errors try a lower speed than that).

I did check Md5sum and it was ok. I did lower the speed of infra recorder to 1x. Still got the same problem.

Check that the md5sum is correct first and make sure that you burn it slowly.

IF the md5sum doesn't match you'll need to get it again - I suggest using a torrent if you can

Edit - scratch that - the forum is reaaally slow here tonight :)

I'm on a mission to terminate the "low speed burn" myth.

If you can't burn a higher speeds, there is something wrong with your computer. If that is the case, burning at low speeds is probably going to fail also.

Almost every CD/DVD burning program has a "verify after burn" option, use it.

I'll look for that option.
