Well, the title says it all. I want to find a high definition webcam (1.3M pixels or higher) to use in skype and/or pidgin without having to install some exotic driver or recompile the kernel.

What are your suggestions?

Side question: Can you talk to your skype contacts when using pidgin?

No, more like: I use Pidgin to talk to someone who's using Skype on the other end.

I don't think so, Skype is a closed protocol. :(

The Logitech Quickcam Fusion 1.3Mpix Webcam PC should work on Hardy Heron out-of-the-box. If you have a laptop, you may want to take that to the local store and aks if you can try it.

Edit: Look at this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams)!
Edit2: Also look here (http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/cameras) and here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsMultimediaWebCameras?high light=%28webcam%29).

Pidgin does not support video. What ims are you using? There are others that support video.

I currently use Skype in Vista with my Micosoft LifeCam VX-6000 1.3M pixels.

If only I could use it in Ubuntu...

Any possibility Pidgin will handle video conference in the next release (if there is one)
