View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu Server: Can I add desktop to configure only?

Hi everyone,

I want to install a clean 8.04 Server as a LAMP and home NAS server, and I'd like it to be buttoned down. But I remember doing the same with Feisty and it was a real pain getting everything configured (i.e. Firewall, Samba, PPPoE, drivers for wifi, etc.)

I am thinking of using apt-get to install the ubuntu-desktop so I can use a GUI to help me do all the config. I think I found the Synaptic Package Manager a real help. Then once it is working use apt-get remove to get rid of the desktop? Is this a good/bad idea?

My other option is to try to add a LAMP server to FreeNAS, but even though I'm a newbie, I'm still much more familiar with Ubuntu/Debian. Plus, I am still dreaming of adding MythBuntu to the mix later on.

TIA
