The improved Asus Eee 900 has gone on sale in the UK this weekend.

No Intel Atom, it's still the Celeron :(

Will the big increase in price compared to the Eee 701 put people off?

Looking at the specs I'd say it's a rip-off. You''re going to have to pay out more for additional hardware so you might as well save some more money and get one with it all :)

If needed a window$ pre-loaded and reformat with linux OS of your choice :)

I like the small weight and form factor. And, the new 8.9" screen with 1024 horizontal resolution is much better! However, I think it needs to be priced below the $500 mark vs. the $550 asking price.

When it gets an atom CPU, I may have to pick one up.

For that kind of money you can get a nice celeron (even a core2duo sometimes) on sale easily. Dont see the excitement :(

this is truly a rip-off price, not that i am in the market for a laptop, but the one below is £80 cheaper, and is ok, apart from having ME2, which can easily be removed!

Ebuyer had full size Pentium Dual Core laptops for under £300 last time I looked.

For portability the Eee chassis is great, but I think £330 is too big a jump from the £200 - £220 of the 701.

Maybe the Eee900 will drop a bit over time.

You need to look at it's size in comparison to the price. It's true you can get much better features and performance for a similar price but if you want something the same size you have to double the cost!

I'm not saying it's a bargain but it's far from a rip-off.

I'm seriously considering of buying it. I need something ultraportable, and you can't go cheaper than this. True, I could buy EEE 701, but the screen size and lower memory puts me off.

this is a bargain for under a £100, and supposed to ship in June

i would look at MSI Wind for ultraportable. Looks rather nice inside and out.

But will it run Linux? This is not a rhetorical question - I don't want to shell out loadsa money for a laptop only to discover that you can't get drivers for the screen or wireless or something else fundamental. This is what has prevented me from buying a laptop for some time now. I just can't be sure it will work.

Get a Dell with Ubuntu or a Thinkpad.

I have an R61 and everything works superbly with Hardy.

Hmm. For the forst time ever I've found a Linux (Ubuntu) loaded laptop on the Dell web site. Now I have to choose between a dinky Asus 900 and a better equipped standard size laptop. One thing I like about the Dell is that it's intel graphics and wireless so won't need nasty binary drivers.

well, you could ask in a thread if anyone who has one would care to comment on their experiences, or get the full specs from the manufacturers support site, and check the bits n' pieces from the various HCL's.
