Hi,

I just installed Xubuntu 8.04 before onto a master HDD and Windows XP is on a slave HDD and when I start the computer Grub loads fine, Xubuntu loads fine but Windows XP says "A disk read error has occured, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart"

Does anyone know how to get Windows XP working again through Grub?

just pointing out "sudo fdisk -l" is one command, otherwise you won't get output, and after hitting enter it will ask for your user's password, type it in (nothing will show up) and hit enter.

That's fine. Now:
sudo fdisk -l (all together)

These HDD's, are they both SATA, both IDE or a mix of SATA and IDE?

Backup your file first:
sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.old
Edit:
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Change this:
title Microsoft Windows XP Professional
root (hd1,0)
savedefault
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1
To this:
title Microsoft Windows XP Professional
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
Save, exit, reboot.

Ok it appears to have saved the file first after asking me the password.

It said gedit is not installed so I'm currently downloading it.

Ok I have made the change but it has made no difference I still get the same error when choosing Windows XP.
