I am interested in hearing what everyone uses as their pim. I was using kontact recently, and I liked it... but it just didn't do it for me. What else is out there?

Thunderbird with the Lightning extension is perfect for me, but I don't need MS Exchange support.

I use Evolution, but I honestly think Kontact is a nicer implementation. I just hate it's UI.

Does anyone use chandler? There were lots of hits for it on google?

I had totally forgotten about Chandler. Sadly, it's not in Ubuntu repositories, so I guess I wasn't the only one.

Evolution, been using it for at least a year now and I don't miss any features or functions. It's pretty decent. With additional applications like opensync or multisync (and depending on the mobile device) it syncs quite nicely.

When I first used Evolution, it ended up crashing on me, so I have stayed away since. But that was a long time ago, and I have enough knowledge to fix it these days, so I am giving it another try.

Unfortunately, I can't get my gmail account set up, I have followed the how-tos, but it just isn't happening.

The pop server says its working, but it isn't fetching my email.
The smtp server isn't working, it gives me this error.

Error while performing operation.

RCPT TO <agim25@gmail.com> failed: <agim25@gmail.com>... Relaying denied

Here are my settings:

Server type POP
server pop.gmail.com
use secure connection SSL encryption
Authentication type Password\
remember password is checked

And for the SMTP server
server type smtp
server smtp.gmail.com
Use secure connection TLS encryption
Authentication type login
remember password is checked

So what is going on?

In username are you putting your full email address, e.g andycooll@gmail.com (not just andycooll)?

Yeah, full email address. Still nothing.

As far as the receiving of emails... Do you think the fact that I checked "Leave messages on the server" could be keeping me from getting my email? I wouldn't think that would be the case, but when I did use evolution, I allowed it to take my messages from the server and it worked fine.

???

Facebook/Thunderbird/Cell phone (and GrandCentral from Google)

Facebook for people I don't really talk to much, but if I ever need their info I can get it from there. Thunderbird for people I frequently email.

Cell phone/Grand Central for phone #s.

Well SMTP may not work because most ISPs on ADSL would want you to use their SMTP server rather than an 'external' SMTP server. For example I used to be with Nildram and still have an email address with them however in order to send emails from my Nildram account I have to use my current ISPs SMTP server. Might be worth a try in your case...

I prefer Thunderbird+Lightning but use Evolution because of the better integration with my desktop. I like that it uses my system icons, I like the calendar integration in my panel clock, but from a functionality standpoint, Thunderbird+Lightning is preferable to me. Oh well, can't have it all. Evolution seems a bit buggier than Tbird too. If they ever make a Thunderbird 3.0 that integrates into the Linux desktop like FF 3.0, I'm going to have to switch away from Evo.

So what is going on?

have you also placed the portnumbers behind the pop & smtp servers?
in effect pop.gmail.com:993
smto.google.com:587

That's how I got evolution configured.
Also if you are using gmail, skip the pop and go for IMAP.

Chandler (www.chandlerproject.org), of course. It is always opened on a Virtual Desktop of mine! It is getting a lot of developer activity in the latest months so it is really getting good. It is very good for GTD too. 4 stars and a half.
