gnome-panel width

does anyone know how to set the width of gnome-panel. I want it to be shorter and x centered. I tried non-expand thing but it bugs me while trying to resize itself every time a window is opened or closed.

I looked everywhere, I'm starting to think that there is no such property. if so I'll report a feature request immediately :)
