hardy: xorg.conf only an empty skeleton!

After installing Hardy I noticed that xorg.conf contained only:

But the mouse wheel is not working.
xev tells me that keys 6 and 7 are pressed, but no application seems aware of them.

Where is my error?

I think this is part of the bulletproof X Server that has been implemented. Whether it turns out to be a good thing or a bad thing is yet to be seen ;)

It certainly makes editing xorg.conf harder unless you know how it should look

The official line -- The goal of this specification is to eliminate the need for users to need to run apt-get reconfigure on the commandline. That approach is confusing and too technical for many users, so moving away from that will solve a key pain point for users.

To me Bullet proof X is noting more than a way to trash your nearly but not quiet valid X.Org or X Window System server configuration file. And trash them it sure can do.
