is it just the alternate cd that uses LILO instead of GRUB with 8.04? I have never used LILO before and it is much, much slower than Grub. I have not had chance to install a desktop version of 8.04 yet and do not need it.

If my memory serves me correctly then grub does not support lvm I think, unless you use the dev version, and I need lvm support. Is the dev version not stable enough to use? Heck, Canonical release LTS versions with betas of firefox and open office, so why not grub 2? is it so unstable?

I am not too familiar with grub vs. lilo or much about boot loaders in general, however:

I used the alternate CD to install 64bit Hardy, and I have the grub loader by default, lilo is not mentioned.

but did you use lvm for all your partitions, especially boot? or just use standard ext3 partitions?
