I installed Ubuntu 8.04 but whenever I load it it loads but doesn't open gnome and just displays home login. It says briefly segmentation error.

Now when I type : X ; the X server loads but too much functionalities are not there and it doesn't load properly.

I can run it normally from the CD in alive session.

I'm almost sure it installed correctly but somehow gnome didn't and I'm sure reinstalling wouldn't help.

Is there a way from the command line to get gnome or X or whatever and fix it.

Like apt-get gnome -fix ?
