So I went through most of the installation and my drive is already partitioned but once the installer gets to 78% (where it says "less than a minute left"), a window pops up and says that I may have a faulty cd/dvd drive or a faulty drive or maybe the disk is dirty or something. Does this perhaps to do with the unmoveable files on windows when defragmenting?

You can check if your CD is damaged. When loading the CD there is the option :
Check CD
That's all I know.

Try the safe graphics install option.
If not successful, try the alternate CD.
