Hi,
A common thing I've heard is that people thing the main #ubuntu channel on freenode is too big, and needs breaking down. As Ubuntu is getting more popular by the day, I see what they mean. Basically, I've just joined #ubuntu-uk and seen that it's empty. Would anyone be interested in using it? (This mainly applies to visitor from the UK, obviously, but I don't see a problem with other nations joining). If so, a channel could be set up. I'm currently propping the place open now. I could also see it as more of a off topic channel, as people tend to get told off in the main ubuntu channel for that [-X

Wouldn't it be better to break it down into languages instead of countries? Like ubuntu-en ubuntu-es etc etc...

Agreed. No need for different countries really, and off topic chatters can just join a random channel. Unless you want to chat about Ubuntu/Linux/etc but nothing specific like problems, then an Ubuntu-ot channel could be set up or something.

A country option may be good in the future, when Ubuntu becomes a lot bigger. At the moment however I don't think Ubuntu is large enough for country specific IRC rooms.
Although it's a pretty good idea. :)

Looks like nobody is interested. I've had about two people join since posting, one to spam his own channel, and another who left shortly after joining.
Maybe when Ubuntu is more popular...

Ribs, your idea is technically great, don't feel downhearted just because it has not taken off yet, however when Ubuntu is say as popular as Mandrake or SuSE, then I'm sure there'll be a lot more interest in country specific IRC chat rooms related to Ubuntu.
However, at the moment, Ubuntu is not big enough really.
