I can't get a log in screen since upgrading to 8.04 via the update manager.

If it's of any help in troubleshooting for anyone to figure out why I can't get a login screen here's what my logs show (sorry for the length):

Everything seems OK until I get the "gdm WARNING: Couldn't authenticate user"

So then I went to check my gdm log at /var/log/gdm/:0.log

I didn't think this is too bad? So I went off to check my authentication log because syslog reported an auth error. Here's what I show in /var/log/auth.log

May 1 18:18:35 Home-Ubuntu gdm[5628]: pam_nologin(gdm:auth): cannot determine username
May 1 18:19:03 Home-Ubuntu last message repeated 17 times
May 1 18:19:05 Home-Ubuntu login[5022]: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user steve by LOGIN(uid=0)

May 1 18:19:26 Home-Ubuntu last message repeated 12 times
May 1 18:19:27 Home-Ubuntu sudo: steve : TTY=tty3 ; PWD=/home/steve ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/sbin/reboot
May 1 18:19:27 Home-Ubuntu sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user root by steve(uid=0)
May 1 18:19:27 Home-Ubuntu sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user root
Ah ha! I thought, it's PAM causing my problems so I checked /etc/pam.d/gdm

#%PAM-1.0
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1 envfile=/etc/default/locale
@include common-auth
auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
@include common-account
session required pam_limits.so
@include common-session
session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
@include common-password
And I think that looks OK and so does /etc/pam.d/gdm-autologin

#%PAM-1.0
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1 envfile=/etc/default/locale
auth required pam_permit.so
@include common-account
session required pam_limits.so
@include common-session
@include common-password

Thanks

Hi,

I have the same problem since upgrading to 8.04 and my logs look the same as yours.

Did you have any luck with fixing this?

Has me stumped...

Same for me. Any response from someone who got past this would be helpful, thanks.

hi,

i have got the same problem after upgrading to 8.04.
Some lines before the final "* running final boot scripts ..." i have found an error like this "/etc/event.d/tty3:13: Unknown stanza"

My /etc/event.d/tty* scripts were broken. They looked like this

# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on runlevel-2
start on runlevel-3
start on runlevel-4
start on runlevel-5

stop on shutdown

respawn /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

now they look like this

# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on stopped rc2
start on stopped rc3
start on stopped rc4
start on stopped rc5

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

respawn
exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

if someone needs the other five tty scripts i can post it. Just ask.
I hope it helps.
