so, i'm playing around with ff4a1pre and wondering when mozilla devs will "wake-up" and include mouse gestures by default in ff...

does anyone know/have a good idea why they haven't already?

Firefox 3 isn't even finished yet. So I'm pretty sure the development on 4 hasn't really even started. That feature could still be a plan for Firefox 4.

yeah, but i always wondered why it wasn't even in ff1! ;-)

I never liked mouse gestures, move the mouse the wrong way and boom you are at a porno site...

now THAT could be dangerous... i mainly only use them for rocker gestures on my lappy, but still; it seems as though at least 90% of users use them, so why not include them by default?

Wrong- 90% internet users wouldnt know what you are even talking about.

I don't like mouse gestures at all. I certainly don't want them included by default. I like that they can be enabled via add-in like many other browser customizations.

i'm suggesting--somewhat anecdotally--90% of ff users would want them...
oh, and, ps: your avatar is my current wallpaper...

i'm surprised; what makes you not like them?

I like using a mouse as a pointer mover. I do a lot of on screen selection, cutting and pasting and I want my mouse to behave as a selecter and pointer not a macro short cut. This is true outside the browser and in. I like consistency of function so the mouse behaves the same, or nearly so, in most all applications.

I also like the idea of minimizing the number of add-on features by default in the browser. I like the idea of working on stabalizing the interface and API to add-ins rather than including them by default. That way add-ins could be more stable and cause fewer browser crashes and memory leaks. A browser can then be customized to suit a users needs.

very valid points. just trying to get a feel, but would you say most ff users you know would agree with you?

I like mouse gestures and mouse macro commands. I think they should be better integrated everywhere. It basically applies Fitt's laws to give every function an infinate size. Rather than moving my mouse to a specific point, with a finite and tiny size, I'm able to move my mouse to a point (or points) that all have infinite size.

I don't use mouse gestures for anything other than compiz
Add: should they finish 3 before they start 4

I used mouse gestures once, I hated it.

It's just not something 90% of people use, even in Firefox. Maybe, 10% of firefox users use mouse gestures, definitely not 90%.

like i wrote before, by my experiences in the forums (ubuntu and mozilla), it seems otherwise...

I can't say I am a big fan of mouse gestures. I used them for a little while to over come the "new and different" dislike, and like others have said, I like using it as a pointer rather than a macro. I use keyboard shorts from macros, much less chance of accidental activation.

P.S. I thought FF 3 was supposed to be out last month? Ubuntu's release was supposed to come fairly close to FF3's release... or so I thought.

With Firefox 4 Alphas you probably won't really get a feel for what they are planning to do with it for like another 6 months. Heck Firefox 3 Final is not even out yet.

fair enough...

very true as well... i just always wondered why it seemed as though "everyone" was using an extension for mouse gestures, but the devs weren't putting them in by default.

If I were to generalize I would say most of the people I know are happy to get search results they want, or arrive at the sites they want and just have their experience work well for them.

This is the first time I have seen someone mention mouse gestures- I guarantee not anywhere near 90% of people using the internet have even heard of them. I have been using Opera for 2 years and even I didnt know about them until about 6 months ago.

well my reason for hating mouse gestures is that I am clumsy, I always drop my mouse.

really? it's hard for me to breathe without rocker gestures... okay, well maybe not breathe.

I personally hit the wrong menu entry/button at least 5x more frequently than I accidentally initiate a mouse gesture. I, however, allow gestures to be drawn, so if I ever initiate one by accident I'll notice and be able to cancel it out before releasing the mouse button.

Hey, this is one of the reasons why I love mouse gestures :D
Seriously, though: I love mouse gestures and actually the reason why I started using Firefox (it was still Firebird back then) was that a friend told me about the mouse gestures extension and I wanted to try it. That's how I got into open source and without the mouse gestures I probably wouldn't even be posting here.
However, I don't think it should be a part of Firefox itself, simply because of the fact that many people seem to hate this feature. I can't really understand why, but it seems to be like coriander -- you either love it or loathe it.
BTW, I'm really impressed with they way Opera handles gestures. It's off by default, but when you make a mouse gesture for the first time after you installed Opera a dialog pops up and says something like "it looks like you made a mouse gesture. Do you want to turn on mouse gestures?". Nice.

i use opera and i've disabled mouse gestures in it, i don't like them, but i haven't given them a chance really. i've herad people complaining how firefox is becoming too bloated as it is without adding extra features by default that most people don't like and will disable.

extensions are perfect for mouse gestures, they help slim the browser and let the people who want mouse gestures, or whatever, have them!
