add/remove application not responding

hi, i keep having my add/remove application showing busy the minute i click to update as it tells me its outdated. been like that for 2 hours.
any ideas?

PS have never used ubuntu previously. on 8.04

will be grateful

never mind think that "apt get update" did the trick. though it might help to know why from the add/rem app screen it jams

now it does'tn give me the out-of-date message once i open it. thats where it would get stuck
