why my monitor turns off

i got two graphics cards ... first is the built in one intel (which im working on) ... the other is ATI Radeon 256 mb ... when i try to work on the ati the system boots but once it reaches the welcome screen the monitor turns off ...... my os is ubuntu 8.04 with KDE and the mainbord is asrock 865 ..... how can i run the ati card right
